Volunteer Time Off (VTO): BASIC Gives Back
As workforce demographics evolve, companies are taking notice of their employees’ changing values. Modern attitudes, especially those of Millennials and Gen-Z, place high importance in working for companies who are devoted to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and investing in their employees. Many employers are satisfying those values by adopting a new benefit: Volunteer Time Off (VTO). A VTO program allows employees to be paid for a set amount of volunteer hours logged with nonprofit organizations. BASIC is proud to share stories from our VTO program and the positive impact we made on our local communities in 2019.
Our staff’s VTO experiences included a wide range of activities like volunteering in local classrooms, ringing bells for The Salvation Army, and helping with meal assistance programs to name a few. BASIC team members in our NEO offices volunteered at United Way of Summit County as part of their Sort-A-Thon.
Volunteers helped sort and distribute snacks that were donated by individuals and companies in the area for local school children on the free lunch program. The additional snacks provided important supplemental nutrition for area children over winter break.
Employees at the BASIC Grand Rapids office spent time volunteering at Kids’ Food Basket, an organization that provides an evening meal for children at or below the poverty level in West Michigan. Our BASIC team members helped assemble components for Sack Suppers that Kids’ Food Basket distributes to 8,800 kids each weekday!
Robert Hayes, President and CEO of BASIC, offered his thoughts on why the company chose to implement a VTO program. “We wanted to make a statement. Good deeds are not just about giving money. Good deeds are about committing our time and effort to help those in need and improve the quality of life for everyone in our communities. I could not be more proud of our employees who participate in our VTO program. Our goal is nothing less than 100% participation. Volunteerism creates fulfillment. Fulfillment creates positive self-worth. Positive self-worth creates happier employees, and happier employees are more productive employees.”
