Proposed Federal Paid Leave – American Families Plan
President Biden’s American Family Plan would offer 12 weeks of paid family leave for Americans for several reasons, up to $4,000 a month and up to 80% of regular wages for the lowest-earning workers. Examples of qualifying reasons for leave include caring for a sick family member or themselves, caring for a new child, or coping with sexual assault or instances of domestic violence. It would be the first major legislation to provide paid leave of this nature for all Americans.
The current proposed plan could be difficult to pass Congress. While the United States is one of the only countries without a federal paid leave program, this plan comes with the cost of $225 billion over ten years.
